PILING WORKS
This refers to the installation of piles or supporting columns below ground level, to serve as a foundation or support for structures built above ground level. These piles or columns are designed to have sufficient strength structurally and geotechnically to support the weight of structures built above ground level , and should remain stable over a long period of time as well as withstand environmental factors such as strong winds, minor earth tremors, soil movements, and underground water.
EARTH RETAINING STRUCTURAL WORKS
This structure occasionally incorporated part of piling works, as piling works involve the excavation of soil in a cylindrical shape, and earth retaining walls can be constructed continuously with many piles to form a wall which prevents the surrounding soil from collapsing into the designed excavated area. In short, earth retaining walls are structures built on construction sites to retain soil, rock or other materials in a vertical condition.
GEOTECHNICAL WORKS
This involves geological modification and improvement of ground properties in terms of permeability, strength, capacity and density. Soil modifications and improvements play an essential role in the stability of foundations built below ground level, and this would affect the stability of structures built above ground level. There are two (2) types of geotechnical works, namely slope stabilisation and ground improvement works.
